Exceptions to zero duty — models outside the preference

The badge is not a customs criterion — that is the short answer. US groups have produced in Canada and Mexico for decades, while European and Asian manufacturers run plants in the States, so where a car comes from and where its logo comes from are two different things. 0% or 10% is set on the VIN.

Why does the badge not decide the rate?

A badge describes where a company comes from; duty describes where a car comes from. Those two parted ways long ago, because groups build models wherever they have spare capacity, often in several countries under one name. So 0% or 10% only emerges from the production data behind a VIN.

How do you check a specific car?

Enter the number and compare the result against the condition of the preference in force since 2026-07-01: a car finally assembled in the United States qualifies. Any other plant country means 10%. The reading covers one car, so repeat it for every lot you are considering.

How much will you save?

The scale follows customs value, which is why you get the mechanism here rather than a finished number. A car from outside American lines pays 10% duty and carries a higher 23% VAT base; a car from a US plant pays 0%. Put both variants into the calculator and compare.
