Ford Focus from the USA — 0% duty or 10%
US-assembled Ford Focus cars usually reach us from the plant in Wayne. If your car came off that line, duty is 0% instead of 10%; if it came from a plant in another country, the preference does not apply. The split runs by single VIN, not by model.
Where is the Ford Focus assembled?
Focus cars off American lines carry the VIN prefixes 1FA in our database. A prefix shows the manufacturer and the country, but the 0% rate is decided by the final assembly plant read for the specific number. The table shows how many cars from each plant have passed through us.
| Plant | Country | VIN prefix | Cars in our database | Duty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wayne | United States | 1FA | 74,225 | 0% duty |
| — | United States | 1FA | 1,160 | 0% duty |
| Hermosillo | Mexico | 3FA | 923 | 10% |
| Wixom | United States | 1FA | 457 | 0% duty |
| Saarlouis | Germany | WF0 | 274 | 10% |
| Flat Rock | United States | 1FA | 1 | 0% duty |
How do you check a specific car?
How much will you save?
The zero rate works in two places at once: 10% of duty disappears and the base for 23% VAT falls with it. That is why the difference across the whole bill on a US-assembled Focus is larger than duty alone. The result follows customs value, so put yours into the calculator.
Work out the import costWhat the import cost is made of
The bill is made of a few fixed percentages and one variable, which is the customs value of the car. Duty is 0% on a Focus assembled in the USA and 10% on the rest, excise is 3.1% or 18.6% by engine size, and 23% VAT is charged on the value with duty and excise added.
| Component | Rate |
|---|---|
| Duty — car assembled in the USA | 0% |
| Duty — everything else | 10% |
| Excise | 3.1% up to 2.0 l, 18.6% above 3.5 l |
| VAT | 23% |
Rates, not amounts — the calculator works the sum out on current data.
Zero-duty paperwork — our job
Proof of origin and clearance are on us. For a Focus that the VIN places on an American line, we assemble the plant documentation and declare the car at the 0% rate. What we need from you is the car you picked and its VIN.
What to watch for when buying at auction
Before you raise your bid, look at the damaged area. On a Focus it is most often features.lots.characteristics.damage_type.front_end, and then the key question is whether the body structure was disturbed. Origin is a separate check, run on the VIN — the two things are independent of each other.
| Damage | Cars in our database |
|---|---|
| Front end | 39,202 |
| Rear end | 10,303 |
| Side | 9,550 |
From the USA or from Europe?
The key difference is procedural rather than a matter of badge. A car from the European market goes through no import, a car from the States does — and then the assembly country counts: an American line means 0%, any other 10%, with excise and 23% VAT on top. For a Focus, the check starts at the VIN.
