Where the Mercedes-Benz GLS is assembled
Zero duty is a property of one car, not of the Mercedes-Benz GLS as such. An American line means 0% duty and a lower 23% VAT base; a line outside the States means 10%. Manufacturers run parallel production on several continents, so two cars from one model year can clear differently.
Where is the Mercedes-Benz GLS assembled?
GLS cars off American lines carry the VIN prefixes 4JG in our database. A prefix shows the manufacturer and the country, but the 0% rate is decided by the final assembly plant read for the specific number. The table shows how many cars from each plant have passed through us.
| Plant | Country | VIN prefix | Cars in our database | Duty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vance | United States | 4JG | 5,339 | 0% duty |
How do you check a specific car?
How much will you save?
Run it down both routes, because the GLS exists on both: a car from an American line at 0% duty, a car from a plant outside the USA at 10%. The rest of the bill is identical — excise by engine size and 23% VAT. The calculator shows both versions from the same inputs.
Work out the import costWhat the import cost is made of
Three tax lines and one variable. Duty follows the assembly country of your GLS: 0% for an American line, 10% for any other. Excise goes by engine size — 3.1% or 18.6%. VAT at 23% is worked out last, on customs value with duty and excise added.
| Component | Rate |
|---|---|
| Duty — car assembled in the USA | 0% |
| Duty — everything else | 10% |
| Excise | 3.1% up to 2.0 l, 18.6% above 3.5 l |
| VAT | 23% |
Rates, not amounts — the calculator works the sum out on current data.
Zero-duty paperwork — our job
Proof of origin and clearance are on us. For a GLS that the VIN places on an American line, we assemble the plant documentation and declare the car at the 0% rate. What we need from you is the car you picked and its VIN.
What to watch for when buying at auction
Cars end up at sales in the States mostly after damage, so the condition report matters more than the odometer. Check whether the damage touches structural parts or only panels, and price the repair before you bid. The duty rate ignores condition — a damaged GLS clears exactly like an intact one.
| Damage | Cars in our database |
|---|---|
| Front end | 2,434 |
| Rear end | 664 |
| Side | 521 |
From the USA or from Europe?
The comparison only means something after a VIN check. The same Mercedes-Benz GLS bought in the States can come in at 0% or 10% depending on the assembly plant, so a car from the USA is not one cost category. On the European side clearance falls away, and usually so does the choice of versions.
