Hyundai Elantra: where the car was built and what it pays
Zero duty is a property of one car, not of the Hyundai Elantra as such. An American line means 0% duty and a lower 23% VAT base; a line outside the States means 10%. Manufacturers run parallel production on several continents, so two cars from one model year can clear differently.
Where is the Hyundai Elantra assembled?
The split shows in the data: 79,691 Elantra cars reached us with an American assembly plant, the rest came from plants in other countries. The first group qualifies for 0% duty, the second for 10%. The counts cover every car recorded in our database, not the current offer.
| Plant | Country | VIN prefix | Cars in our database | Duty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ulsan | South Korea | KMH | 68,942 | 10% |
| — | United States | 5NP | 67,009 | 0% duty |
| Montgomery | United States | 5NP | 12,682 | 0% duty |
| Ul-San | South Korea | KMH | 10,571 | 10% |
How do you check a specific car?
How much will you save?
Run it down both routes, because the Elantra exists on both: a car from an American line at 0% duty, a car from a plant outside the USA at 10%. The rest of the bill is identical — excise by engine size and 23% VAT. The calculator shows both versions from the same inputs.
Work out the import costWhat the import cost is made of
The cost of importing a Hyundai Elantra splits into rates you know in advance and a customs value you do not. Fixed: duty at 0% or 10%, excise at 3.1% or 18.6% by engine size, VAT at 23%. Variable: the purchase price, transport and port charges.
| Component | Rate |
|---|---|
| Duty — car assembled in the USA | 0% |
| Duty — everything else | 10% |
| Excise | 3.1% up to 2.0 l, 18.6% above 3.5 l |
| VAT | 23% |
Rates, not amounts — the calculator works the sum out on current data.
Zero-duty paperwork — our job
You put nothing together yourself. We check the origin of the car by VIN, prepare the papers and run the clearance; if the production data points to assembly outside the USA, we declare it at 10% so the bill does not change when you come to collect.
What to watch for when buying at auction
Cars end up at sales in the States mostly after damage, so the condition report matters more than the odometer. Check whether the damage touches structural parts or only panels, and price the repair before you bid. The duty rate ignores condition — a damaged Elantra clears exactly like an intact one.
| Damage | Cars in our database |
|---|---|
| Front end | 37,453 |
| Rear end | 13,324 |
| Side | 8,246 |
From the USA or from Europe?
The key difference is procedural rather than a matter of badge. A car from the European market goes through no import, a car from the States does — and then the assembly country counts: an American line means 0%, any other 10%, with excise and 23% VAT on top. For a Elantra, the check starts at the VIN.
